L'idea di Guild Wars 2 nacque durante una riunione di design per Utopia, una delle campagne del primo Guild Wars. A quei tempi ArenaNet pubblicava nuove campagne ogni sei mesi, e il team si rese conto che non sarebbe riuscito a realizzare tutto ciò che voleva con quei tempi e quei limiti. Su spinta del cofondatore Jeff Strain, la discussione si spostò sui problemi accumulati: tutorial sempre più pesanti e un numero crescente di abilità difficili da bilanciare. A poco a poco quella conversazione si trasformò nel progetto di un gioco completamente nuovo.

Il lavoro iniziò nel 2007, e il gioco fu annunciato il 27 marzo di quell'anno insieme all'ultima espansione del primo capitolo, pensata come ponte verso il seguito. L'ambizione era distinguersi nel genere dei giochi di ruolo online con una storia che reagisce alle scelte del giocatore e con eventi dinamici al posto delle classiche missioni, oltre a un combattimento più dinamico che premiasse la collaborazione tra le professioni.

ArenaNet rinunciò ai grandi test pubblici anticipati usati per il primo Guild Wars, ritenendo che i giocatori ormai li vedessero come prove di un gioco quasi finito. Il motore originale fu profondamente modificato, con ambienti 3D in tempo reale, animazioni migliori e la fisica Havok, e i disegni concettuali vennero integrati nel modo di raccontare la storia.

Guild Wars 2 è uscito il 28 agosto 2012 ed è arrivato su Steam nel 2022, per il suo decimo anniversario.
