Lo studio sudcoreano Pearl Abyss fu fondato nel settembre 2010 da Kim Daeil, sviluppatore che in passato aveva lavorato con Hangame e NHN Gaming, e iniziò subito a lavorare a Black Desert. Fin dall'inizio il team decise di creare un proprio motore grafico, pensato per un mondo aperto senza caricamenti e per assedi ai castelli con moltissimi personaggi sullo schermo.

I primi dettagli furono resi pubblici nel 2012, dopo un accordo per la pubblicazione in Giappone, e il gioco fu mostrato alla fiera G-Star e poi alla Gamescom 2013. Dopo diverse beta, Black Desert uscì nel 2015 in Corea, Giappone e Russia e arrivò in Nord America ed Europa il 3 marzo 2016.

Negli anni il gioco è stato ampliato con molte espansioni e ha dato vita anche a una versione per dispositivi mobili.
