Beat Saber nasce da un piccolo team dell'Europa centrale. Dopo aver completato il loro gioco precedente, Chameleon Run, gli sviluppatori slovacchi Vladimír Hrinčár e Ján Ilavský, allora con lo studio Hyperbolic Magnetism, iniziarono a creare demo e prototipi per la realtà virtuale, condividendone alcuni su Facebook.

Quei video attirarono l'attenzione del compositore ceco Jaroslav Beck, che incontrò il team a Praga per convincerlo ad affidargli la colonna sonora. Dall'unione delle due cose nacque l'idea vincente: tagliare a ritmo di musica blocchi colorati con due spade luminose, in ambienti al neon.

Dopo circa due anni di sviluppo, il gioco uscì in accesso anticipato il 1° maggio 2018 e in meno di una settimana divenne il gioco con le valutazioni più alte su Steam; entro febbraio 2021 aveva superato i quattro milioni di copie vendute. Lo studio cambiò nome in Beat Games e nel 2019 fu acquisito da Oculus, l'azienda di Facebook (oggi Meta).
