Steam, October 17: three games hold a quarter of all players, Valve alone 22.3%

At 5:22 UTC on October 17, 2026, a Saturday, Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and PUBG: Battlegrounds together had 1,376,195 players online: 25.5% of the total recorded across the 310 Steam games with a figure, in data/games.json.

Counter-Strike 2

The reading is a single instant. Statcade asks Steam how many players are online at that moment and records it once a day. The site's Steam catalog, with update time 2026-10-17T05:22+00:00, contains 312 games: the most played ranking plus a selection of popular titles, as explained on the Sources page. Deadlock and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 (2011) are on the list without a count, and the figures in this article are based on the 310 games that do have a number. Added up they come to 5,403,458 people. That is the sum of these titles, in that minute: the Steam store is larger, and in the same minute there were players outside this list too.

The top stays narrow even within a selection that already contains few small games. The top ten games reach 2,226,454 players, 41.2%. The top fifty reach 4,003,810, 74.1%. Seven games have 100,000 or more players online and on their own account for 1,974,549 people, 36.5%: Counter-Strike 2 (568,345), Dota 2 (505,317), PUBG (302,533), WARDOGS (195,074), AION 2 (186,554), Bongo Cat (115,467) and Apex Legends (101,259). At the other end, 82 games below 1,000 players online add up to 34,011 people, 0.6%. The catalog median is 3,802 players. The mean is 17,431, pulled up by the top: using the mean as a portrait of “a game on this list” describes a level that half of the titles, that morning, were below.

After the top five, the top 10 is completed by ARC Raiders (93,345), Call of Duty (81,939) and Warframe (76,621). Two of the seven games above 100,000 are recent releases according to the Steam page collected in the catalog: AION 2 is dated October 5, 2026, WARDOGS is dated September 10, 2026 and is marked as early access. Bongo Cat, which is free, was ahead of Apex Legends that morning. These are facts from a single hour, and that is exactly why they shift the idea of who occupies Steam compared with a ranking recited from memory.

Valve, as developer or publisher on the store page, appears on nine games and 1,206,682 players, 22.3%. Counter-Strike 2, Dota 2 and Team Fortress 2 (69,065) are its own. Left 4 Dead 2 had 41,119. Garry's Mod, developed by Facepunch Studios and published by Valve, had 19,496. Portal 2, Half-Life 2, Portal and Half-Life: Alyx together were at 3,340. Valve's weight on this list rests on two free games whose store pages carry a date more than ten years old: Counter-Strike 2 is listed as August 21, 2012, Dota 2 as July 9, 2013.

For anyone setting a launch target, the usable number is the median of a stated set. A game that sat at this list's median that Saturday morning would have had 3,802 people online, within a catalog already chosen from the most played games and a selection of popular titles. Being at 100,000 meant being one of seven. The same call to Steam, on a Wednesday or in the evening, would have given a different number: the figure is instantaneous, and a Saturday morning weighs differently from a Tuesday evening.
